The last viewing for the work of artist John Reay - The Lowestoft collection

Dear Friends

My greatest thanks to you all for supporting our gallery and exhibitions here at Another Angle Studio.

It's time to celebrate the work of artist John Reay's Lowestoft-themed work for the last time before it leaves (last day is the 10th August) and we finally close the business after 5 years in operation.

It's been an absolute joy to realise a long-held ambition to start my own business, but the highlight has to be the chance to bring the work of John Reay back to Lowestoft after a long 11-year absence.

I first met John whilst working at Lowestoft Library managing the exhibition space around 1988/90 where he was certainly one of the most popular exhibiting artists in terms of visitors and sales. It is where John showcased his marvellous Punch & Judy, which now adorns our gallery wall and leads people to the exhibition 'Reay of Light'.

John was a painter and draughtsman who trained at both Brighton and Norwich Schools of Art. He lived in Lowestoft, Suffolk, in Denmark Road (opposite the grain store and railway lines) with a print studio in Battery Green Road.

He was noted for his beach scenes with figures channelling his inspiration from both Seurat and Hopper. John's work covered other subjects too and he exhibited as far afield as New York and St Petersburg.

For those people who knew John it has been the most emotional and gratifying experience to have a chance to view and pay tribute. The exhibition notebook has been enthusiastically contributed with marvellous anecdotes, reminiscences and appreciative comments which are heartening, funny and give a real sense of how much people appreciated this wonderful man.

He worked in the Planning Department of Suffolk County Council and also taught art in local schools in Beccles (Sir John Leman) and Lowestoft in Benjamin Britten and Denes HIgh School (once bringing in a motorbike to strip down and show the pupils who otherwise were difficult to engage)!

Reay had an affinity with young people and visitors to the gallery often told of stories where his good nature helped, encouraged and set them on a path, with a debt of gratitude expressed by many.

John's print studio (coincidentally, neighbouring our 'most-easterly gallery') produced lithographs gifted to dignitaries for the Town's 'Twinning' with Plaisir

Art Fair East 2021 Announcement

The UK's most easterly gallery are proud to have been selected for Art Fair East

We here at Another Angle Studio are thrilled to announce our participation with Art Fair East , the most popular art exhibition outside of London. Their goal is to celebrate the works of both national and international artists and galleries to regional audiences for anyone who has a love for art.

Joining us during the event will be our latest lead artist currently showcasing his work at the studio and all-round good chap, Gary Hogben - known for his Pop-art style philatelic, spray/graphic collage work.

Whilst readying for a yet-to-be-revealed exhibition in Italy, Gary's new works effuse dynamism and variety, centering around themes of religion, sexuality, desire and fear (using a vibrant mix of oils, metallic and acrylic paints stylised in a thought-provoking neo-realism). It is anticipated that ‘Fear and Desire’ (oils and acrylics on canvas) will be complete for its first public showing at the Fair.

And, equally sure to please, is Gary's latest regal philatelic collage/acrylic piece ‘Look Up to the Skies’ celebrating the iconic Queen track Bohemian Rhapsody.

As the UK’s most easterly gallery we are surprised and delighted that we are now a destination conveniently situated between three (sorry now make that 2 as one sold to the States), #Banksy #Spraycation works in Lowestoft and to be taking artworks to Art Fair East which is held in the in the medieval splendour of St Andrews Hall, Norwich from 3 ^rd -5th December 2021.

Our Creative Director, Maria said: ‘Both Gary and I are thrilled to have been selected for Art Fair East 2021. This will be a chance to reach new audiences with our work and we are excited to be showing in a fair that has already exhibited international names like Banksy and Nando Kallweit.

Work on show from Another Angle’s 2021 showcase includes Lowestoft artist Miriam King ’s pen and ink piece ‘The Observer’; joining Tim Fair (Oteo)’s vibrant, abstracted sea/skyscapes (collage, acrylic and spray paint canvasses).

Founded, and curated by established artists Will Teather and Brian Korteling, Art Fair East has become acknowledged as one of the leading regional fairs in the country. Now in its sixth year it showcases contemporary art from around the UK and overseas. As successful artists themselves, Will and Brian are passionate about getting more people interested in original contemporary art and helping artists to make a living from their work. The 2019 fair attracted thousands of visitors from around the country.

We will also be presenting works from other artists such as royal academy artist Miriam King's pen and ink piece called 'The Observer', as well as Tim Fair (Oteo)'s vibrant abstracted sea/skyscapes (collage, acrylic and spray paint canvasses).

And finally, a piece from the our privately-owned heritage collection of noted Lowestoft-based artist and printmaker, John Reay (1947-2011) adds to the mix. On show will be one of our favourites, ‘Punch and Judy’, demonstrating John’s affinity for Lowestoft beach life and seaside culture. Lily The Pink... Breast Cancer Awareness Event at Another Angle Studio

Pink Out at Another Angle Studio

On Sunday October 3rd, Another Angle Studio had its very first major charity event promoting the Breast Cancer Now organization as part of the # breastcancerawarenessmonth , which was hosted by our very own photographer Wendy Beckham . Following the theme of pink everyone who attended wore clothing and accessories related to the colour and each spent ten minutes having their own wacky photoshoot along with tea and treats. Whether it was a man, woman, non-binary, child or pet, everyone was welcome to dress up and celebrate.

As stated before, October is breast cancer awareness month, encouraging everyone to regularly check for any lumps and/or bumps residing in the chest area of your body. According to the Breast Cancer Now website, this disease has affected around 55,000 of women and 370 men on a yearly basis worldwide, and almost 9/10 (85%) of women survive breast cancer for five years or more. It's a serious cause that sticks with you for life and may damage the way a person sees themselves, which is why we wanted to give those people an opportunity to help skyrocket their confidence once more, and to let them know that they are not alone.

We would like to personally thank Wendy and Adam for hosting the event and everyone who attended and donated towards the cause on that day, and hope you enjoyed yourselves to the fullest as we did, and also a big thank you to our little mascot puppy Lily for her stellar behaviour with the guests as well as her gorgeous photos.

If you are sad you missed out and are interested in having your own photoshoot done supporting the cause, don't worry. Following the success of the event we have decided to keep it running until October 31st as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month scheme. All you have to do is get in contact with Wendy Beckham and book a date and time with her, and we hope to see you soon!

A Trip to the Seaside with Another Angle Studio

It's all seaside, ships and eventual sun for everyone at Another Angle Studio, as on Saturday the 11th we attended the Maritime Heritage Fair to celebrate the Excelsior's centenary! There we were able to sell prints, promote our arts and craft classes, and even made a few new friends along the way.

The day was jam packed with mini adventures exploring the Excelsior and challenging the inevitable weather. All in which will be featured in this issue. Below are pictures and descriptions of our time at the Lowestoft Heritage Open Day event.

With a beautiful view of the sun rising and shining down on the sea, we were all set to prepare for our stall. But not only were we racing against time, the wind was also opposing us - blowing our goods left, right, and centre. Gazebo's were flying high but we were determined to be ready in time with the help of some of our neighbours.

Once our stall was finally completed, we were ready for the festival to begin. Soon a steady stream of people approached the stand and we were elaborating the arts and crafts behind our products. Many were keen on learning more about how to create these prints themselves so we explained to them about our taster sessions and they were more than happy to sign up. Our other features such as the Teddy Bear Hospital were also popular among the crowd.

We also showcased some of our artists currently exhibiting our work at the studio, such as Royal Academy artist Miriam King and our newest addition Gary Hogben.

After a small pitter patter of rain, the afternoon was when the festival really kicked off with music and a delightful appearance from the sun which thankfully stayed throughout the remainder of the day. At this time the stall was overwhelming packed with customers purchasing our prints. The craft kits were very successful among the children too.

As the weather was brightening up each member took a short break to explore the Excelsior, that's when Maria, Vicki and Maxine met the Red Hat Society , (dressed in their purple dresses and red hats), and whose goal is to help empower women of fine vintage and embrace a friendship and creative side.

The Excelsior however was the main attraction of the event, constantly crowded with people as the boat rocked from side to side (there was even a chance to climb the mast!); it gave a real feeling as to what it's like to set sail and helped to encourage many people to try it out for themselves. After the event, both the Trust's founder and the vessel's rescuer John Wylson and the Excelsior received the Freedom of the Town of Lowestoft. This is huge news as inanimate objects have never been awarded before.

How cool is that?!

Despite by a blustery beginning, the day turned out to be a truly unforgettable time. We want to personally thank everyone for coming to see us on the big day and hope you had just as much fun as we did. Another Angle would also like to thank Diana Moore and Laurence Vulliamy for their wonderful performance and organization of the event.

Out and About Supporting our Heritage & Wildlife on the East Coast

In the Studio or out and about Another Angle is keen to reach out and get involved...

Coming up this September, we at Another Angle Studio are happy to announce our participation with Heritage Open Days , between the 10th to the 19th of September. Our studio and gallery will be open featuring our familiar exhibitors: Miriam King, Tim Fair (Oteo) together with our private collection of the works by the marvellous Suffolk artist John Reay (with two new acquisitions - South Beach and Punch and Judy). We will also have a fabulous new artist Gary Hogben (more on his work in our forthcoming blog post).

As part of Heritage Open Days, we will be joining with the Excelsior Trust for the Lowestoft Maritime Heritage Event on Heritage Quay, Lowestoft and the Herring and Ale Fayre at the Oddfellows Arms in Lowestoft .

The Excelsior Trust will be hosting the Maritime Heritage Fair on Saturday 11th Sept as part of their noble charitable advent to celebrate their long and fascinating history, as well as their centenary! The day will include being able to explore the Excelsior's entire deck from top to bottom, with music, food stalls, other independent creators and shops all celebrating one hundred years since the ships creation.

Th e Herring & Ale Fayre takes place on Sunday 19 September, from 11-6, with live music, talks, guided walks, lots of stalls and stands and plenty to do for families. Carlton Marsh es (part of Suffolk Wildlife Trust - funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund ) are sending a team and there will be face painting provided by the students at East Coast College .

But not only are we attending the celebrations of others, the studio is also hosting something we call the "Have a go!" sessions. This includes spending the evening experimenting, learning and playing with a range of artistic media with lead artist Miriam King. Come join us to meet some new friends, new experiences, and a nice cuppa tea!

All Change for August at Another Angle Studio 2021

Welcome to the UK's most easterly creative studio and gallery

It's been a long time since our last blog post, but that doesn't mean we've been slacking off. We're kicking off the summer and the opening of our studio with a new look, new friends, and a brand new opening of our very first art exhibition!

All throughout June and July of 2021 we joined with Suffolk Open Studios to celebrate the work of artists based in the local area. Featuring the artworks from Royal Academy artist Miriam King, colourful graphical acrylic/spray paint pieces from Tom Fair (Oteo), photography from Another Angle's photographer, Wendy Beckham , and the small personal collection owned by the studio from the dearly departed Lowestoft artist favourite, John Reay.

And that's not all. You may have already noticed but we've made a big change to the outside of our company building. Say goodbye to those desolate empty spaces and hello to bright, sunny colours!

For our grand opening we wanted both our customers and our team to feel welcomed and relaxed, and what better way to do that by adding a bit of personality to the front of our establishment. From there you can now view all the services we provide, full contact information and more.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to come and view the gallery, as well as a huge thank you to all our artists for presenting their works in our building. Without you all, we wouldn't be able to do what we love, and we sincerely hope you stick around to see what we've got next up our sleeves.

September Crafting Fair and Future Updates

On Tuesday September 1st, we at Another Angle Studio hosted our very first crafting fair at the high street in Lowestoft town. Hosting goodies such as face masks, custom handmade dolls, accessories, crafting kits, bags, and more. Originally we had planned to set up the week before, but due to severe weather complications, we unfortunately had to reschedule. However, we had a splendid time and would like to thank everyone who came to visit us or made a purchase at the stall. It goes a long way to help us out!

With this in mind, bearing the success of the market, we have decided to set up our very own crafting stall. Other than selling our own made products, our plan for this is to receive feedback from customers on what we do right, what we can improve on, and forums for if you would like to join our upcoming crafting clubs on weekday evenings. (Limited spaces due to COVID six people per-group rules).

We had a super special person to celebrate last weekend - gaining a First in Law at Kings College London! So, we presented her with our one-of-a-kind graduation keepsake.

Excited with squeals of delight this handmade doll is a now a treasured possession and a reminder of their effort and our pride in their achievement. Huge congratulations to Katie Barton on her massive success throughout this troubling year!

Our Repair Shop

As you may have heard from Maria's video on Facebook , we have decided to change our children's photography room into a crafting space. This is our workshop for making and repairing, and as you may have seen from our previous blog post, our Teddy Bear Hospital surgery.

You can definitely tell, but a lot has changed since you last saw this room. We have moved all the backdrops and studio lights into the main photography/photoshoot room, and brought in plenty of sewing machines, materials, and accessories all ready for you to get into making.

In fact, we've had a very special someone come in to help Victoria repair and clean her very own teddy, Ms Bear!
Louis Freeman (9) delved straight into learning to sew when he saw the opportunity to help Victoria. It looks like he had a great time, too!

And what a brilliant job he's done! Well done Louis!

Teddy Bear Hospital Opening Announcement

With the success of our previous appointment with Hudson and his two friends, the crafts department at Another Angle Studio have decided to open up our very own Teddy Bear Hospital. We'll happily take any type of stuffed animal at any size and make them good as new.

Bear Repair 101

Founding the Lowestoft Bear Hospital

An emergency appointment with the Bear Hospital at Another Angle was spurred on Saturday as young master Hudson rushed to the studio with his two friendly companions, Yellow Ted and Brown Ted.

Both bears had suffered a bad case of stuffing loss in their necks and limbs and needed to have an immediate fluff replacement and filling.

But thanks to nurse Victoria Swan , we were able to perform a quick and successful surgery and both bears were able to make a full recovery in no time.

By taking out the old, worn out stuffing and replacing it with some soft fluffy medium, Yellow Ted and Brown Ted had an amazing transformation and look as if they had been taken right off a store shelf. Their tummies full and able to sit at their own leisure, Yellow Ted is raring to go!

While it is important to clean our cuddly friends, sometimes the fluff inside can get hard and crinkle up, making the toys floppy and sad.

Now they're both stuffed with love and ready to be taken home again. Along with their very own face coverings, perfect for matching with their best buddies when they're out and about. And from a very nervous to a very pleased little boy, we're happy to have helped continue his lifetime of memories with them. What a happy little boy Hudson is, beaming above with his two best friends.

Signage and Barriers for Manufacturing and Construction
In order to keep producing, factories and construction sites need to make sure they are doing everything they can to meet the government’s standards on social distancing. Floor markings are recommended, as well as signage on good hygiene habits, we advise to display signage and posters that outline this.
PVC posters are preferred as these can be easily wiped down and disinfected using alcohol spray and wipes.
Schools, Education & Childminding
With schools, colleges and universities being closed to the majority of students, there’s certainly been a big shift in this sector. Clients from educational organisations will be looking for products that help facilitate remote learning, ease communications with home-schooling families, and especially encourage good hygiene habits and social distancing.
Signage and Safety Products for Food Environments, Restaurant & Takeaway
As one of the hardest hit industries, restaurants, pubs, and entertainment venues will be wanting to reopen as soon as possible when the lockdown is over. Help prepare so that you can hit the ground running. In the meantime, we’ve also got resources for those clients who have been able to move to a delivery or collection-based service! Any food handler who is unwell should not be at work. Although it is very unlikely that coronavirus is transmitted through food, as a matter of good hygiene practice anyone handling food should wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This should be done as a matter of routine, before and after handling food, and especially after being in a public place, blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
Signage and Safety Products Churches, Mosques and Congregation
When churches, mosques, and other religious establishments begin to re-open to worshippers and congregations, specific advice will need to be given to allow gatherings to resume. We’ve got it all in one place.
Beauty, Therapists, Gyms and Leisure
Unfortunately, this sector has been deemed largely non-essential by the government. Gyms, spas, and country clubs have all been closed for the time-being but your clientele will be raring to go when the lockdown eases.

Wuffa Viking and Saxon Re-enactment Society is a group of like minded individuals from all walks of life, dedicated to learning and living the ways of our past ancestors. They feature in shows and events up and down the country specialising in the dark age period that was dominated by the ferocious Vikings and brutal Saxons. Their members range in experience from those just starting out to thirty year veterans. They re-enact all parts of the dark age lifestyle including combat, but also day to day life, such as cooking, blacksmithing, leather-working, tailoring, music and much more.

They are based in Great Yarmouth/Waveney/South Norfolk/Norwich.

Find out below why this was such a satisfying project for Another Angle

Working with Darren from International Tropicals (stockists of tropical fish and invertebrates from around the world), one thing was clear in his vision from the outset... He wanted a red tailed catfish!

Eager to please our client, Another Angle was pleased that this could be a real showcase for our illustrative skills. After all the easy route would be to use paid vector or clip art.

Maria set out by drawing out scamps and sketches, wanting to establish a clean and fresh design that complemented the fabulous range of colourful fish and tank landscaping.

Here's a rough preview of first concepts for discussion with the client, prior to selection of choice and refinement.

So keep an eye out for our posts when we will be letting you know of the final opening date...

It was great to invite the members of Phoenix Group Photography club in Lowestoft to hold their regular Monday evening get-together here at Another Angle Studio. Jack Spratt the Sweep came along to add character to the portrait event, and a lovely model, Erin provided smiles and glamour to the proceedings. Both studios were used on the night, with a range of backdrops, props and clothing, and a small social gathering was held in our Gallery room. Such a lovely evening - please come back soon! A Trip to the Google Digital Garage event at North Walsham on 26th October 2018

Fully enjoyed the trip out to North Walsham (North Walsham Community Centre, New Rd, North Walsham NR28 9DE) to meet the Google Digital Garage Team. What a great day with a fabulous itinerary and so grateful that Google are visiting Market Towns where the sessions are needed most. Being a strong advocate of local technological service provision and training for web technologies, our conversations with the Google representative suggested they would be interested in doing a Case Study.

(Check out Maria's PR page on the website with Phillip Hammond, MP visiting Adande Refrigeration after a letter Maria wrote to talk about the future prospects for business success and confidence in the region). This comes after John Humphries' BBC Panorama Is There Hope ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05p35hh ) painting a gloomy picture of the outlook for the town. (More on that in another post!)

But seriously folks, access and provision of tuition for coding skills and online technologies here in North Suffolk is very difficult to access at a higher level without travelling way across the county to Ipswich - and it's so much more important to invest the training in rural areas, for all the right reasons too.

Mid afternoon, there was a surprise visit by the MP Norman Lamb and it was heartening and useful to be introduced directly and chat to realise that the matter is being given some thought and support in the region.

And, forget the man from Del Monte, or Mr Kipling, the non-gender Google makes exceedingly good cakes!
